At FreshCoat Painting of Fort Worth Texas, we get many requests to remove acoustic popcorn ceiling texture. In fact, these jobs make up a large portion of our business. Many potential customers have done a good job of educating themselves as to what they are getting into. Some have either had work done previously or have tried to do it themselves. Others are just beginning to educate themselves when they call us. Over the next few weeks, we will take a look at some of the more common questions and concerns on the subject of acoustic popcorn ceiling texture removal. Let’s start with the most common questions – those related to Asbestos:
• What is Asbestos and why should I be concerned?
Answer: Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was commonly used in building materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant. Asbestos can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma (a cancer of the chest and abdominal linings), and asbestosis (irreversible lung scarring that can be fatal).
• How do I know if my ceiling contains Asbestos?
Answer: The only way to know for sure is to have a small sample tested. There are several good websites available that demonstrate the proper (safe) way to remove a small section. Once you have your sample it must be sent to an authorized testing facility. There is no DIY method of testing. It must be performed by a certified specialist.
• What are the chances my popcorn has Asbestos?
Answer: Popcorn ceiling texture was most popular from the 1950’s through the 1990’s depending on your area. Not all popcorn installed during this time contains asbestos. Asbestos use in ceiling texture was outlawed in 1977. That does NOT mean it is impossible to find some in houses built after this time frame. If your house was built before 1980, it is probably a good idea to have it tested. After 1980, you should be fine.
Next week we will discuss the steps involved in remodeling your ceilings as well as the variety of reasons to undertake this project. We here at FreshCoat Painting of Fort Worth think you’ll be surprised at how affordable and painless the process can be…not to mention the dramatic difference it will make in your home.
