The Energy Tax Credit Is Back

With income tax season in full swing, you may be delighted to know that the 25C residential energy tax credit has been reinstated! Under this program, a homeowner can receive up to a $500 federal tax credit for installing high efficiency HVAC systems or components.

Even though the credit was reinstated early in 2013, it is retroactive for 2012 and applies to installations through December 31, 2013. The lifetime maximum credit is $500 dating back to 2006. The minimum efficiency ratings for qualification are listed below.

Qualifying HVAC Systems:

• Split Heat Pumps – 15.00 SEER/12.50 EER/8.50 HSPF or higher.
• Split Straight Air Conditioning systems – 16.00 SEER/13.00 EER or higher.
• Packaged Air Conditioning (including gas packs) 14.00 SEER/12.00 EER or higher.
• Packaged Heat Pump (including Dual Fuel) – 14.00 SEER/12.00 EER/8.00 HSPF or higher.

Qualifying Furnaces:

• Any gas furnace that meets or exceeds 95% AFUE rating.

Advanced Main Circulating Fans:

• Advanced main circulating fan in a natural gas, oil, or propane furnace that is less than or equal to 2% of total energy use.

To know whether your system qualifies, find your system’s model number and consult the manufacturer’s website. The manufacturer may have an online listing showing the models that qualify, or they may refer you a central reporting database of the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute.
